A Steward is one who manages the possessions of another. As Catholics, we believe that all we have is ours through the Grace of God, and that we have a responsibility to use wisely the resources (time, talent, treasure) with which God has blessed us. Catholics have an obligation to be responsible and accountable stewards, but there is no hard and fast stipulation on how to structure our stewardship.
Tithing, established by God in the Old Testament, is a common way Catholics choose to structure financial stewardship. Tithing is the practice of returning a tenth of your wealth to God. The tithe was not given based on the needs of the priests, of the Church, or of the poor. It was given simply in recognition and gratitude for the blessings that God had bestowed on the individual. These days, the recommendation is 4% of your income to support the church, 1% to the Catholic Services Appeal, and the remaining 5% to charitable causes of your choice.
Stewardship, especially financial stewardship, is a journey. God doesn’t demand a fixed amount of money or time from us. His claim on us is tougher than that. We must determine for ourselves, with the guidance of Jesus’s teachings, considering our own skills and circumstance, and the needs of our faith community, what is the proper and just amount and way to give back; to be good stewards; to use our time, talent, and treasure to the glory of God.
St. Patrick parish is supported by the generosity of its members. Financial donations allow us to better serve our community, care for the poor and marginalized, and fund the operating expenses of running the church.
