This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord – when Jesus was baptized by John (the Baptizer) in the Jordan river. Jesus had lived an obscure life in Nazareth until this moment. After John dunked him in the water, the Holy Spirit came upon him in the form of a dove and a voice from heaven was heard, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him.” Yes, this guy that no one knew is the SON OF GOD! One might think that this made the front page of the newspapers, that Jesus was the talk of the town in Jericho (closest city) and Jerusalem. But it seems that this revelation was ignored. Later some of John’s disciples visited Jesus and asked, “Are you the one who is to come or should we look for another” (Mt 11:5). Jesus told them to look at the signs – the blind see, the deaf hear and the poor have the good news preached to them. When we read the Bible, recount these stories or listen to them at Church we are invited to believe in the baptism epiphany, that Jesus is the Son of God. If we struggle to believe, we are in the good company of John’s disciples. Just as Jesus invited them so he invites us to “Come and See” (Jn 1:39). To Better Connection in Christ Jesus, Fr.
