When I was growing up Advent and Christmas were full of wonderful rituals. Dad worked a lot and mom taught at the Catholic School in Fredericksburg. Basketball and 4-H projects were in full swing. We were busy but we tried to take time for Advent. Usually we had an advent wreath with some fresh cut cedar and a homemade candle stand for the 3 purple and 1 pink candle. A big white candle was put in the middle. Sometimes we actually prayed prayers as we lit the candles. I remember this tradition fondly although I don’t think I understood the meaning of the greenery, circle, colors and light. But, it was a good tradition.
For a Christmas tree we usually went into the pasture once we were on Christmas break. We would search for the “perfect” tree. The days before Christmas were spent cleaning and decorating our home: lights, ornaments, tinsel, stockings and a nativity set. Then on Christmas eve we went to Mass and before going to bed, put out cookies and milk for Santa. In the morning Dad insisted that we read a gospel account of the Nativity before opening presents. These traditions changed as we grew up and my siblings had children of their own; now my favorite is the live nativity play by the grandkids. One year we even had a live lamb – that was an adventure!
I invite you to spend time with your family to plan your domestic church rituals. If you have some, great. If you don’t, start some. I’m inviting everyone to do 3 of these: Advent Wreath, Nativity Set and Epiphany Door blessings. Together we strive to be Holy Families!
